Today there are so many flooring choices to choose from that will offer good service and add much to the decor of a bathroom. Since the floor covers a great deal of space in a bathroom in relation to it’s overall size, new bathroom flooring can make a great impact and revitalize the whole look of a bath.
Tile is always a good choice and will give good service, be easy to clean, and hold up in this moist area if installed properly. Special attention should be taken to get a good seal around the edges of the room so that moisture can not find it’s way in. Properly installed tile will last for many years, and tile does not go out of style.
Wood laminates can also be a good choice if the look of wood is your preference. For a bathroom installation a better grade of laminate is recommended, and it should be installed exactly as recommended by the manufacturer. Let your supplier know when you make your purchase that this flooring is intended for a bathroom space. Some laminates are better than other in a moist environment.
As with a tile floor, be sure the edges are well sealed. The surface of laminates can hold up very well, but if water creeps in around the edges, you could have problems.
Vinyl and linoleum also work well in a bathroom. Vinyl is warmer for the feet, and also easier on the feet when you are standing for periods of time as it has some give.
Vinyl and linoleum are easy clean surfaces, and work well in areas that get heavy traffic, and in homes with children and pets where frequent cleanup is a daily activity.
Vinyl offers an extensive array of patterns and colors. Many vinyl products now are produced that give the look of either natural stone or wood, and can be very convincing with added textures and pattern.
Consider your personal preferences, your budget, and the living style of the members of your individual household when you are making a flooring choice, whether it is for a bathroom or for another room of the house. Flooring will be with you for a lengthy period of time, is the foundation for the room it is in, and should be something that you can live with and enjoy for as long as it is part of your home.
Whatever flooring you decide to select, check to see what specific cleaning or maintenance requirements it may have. This information is always best gotten from the manufacturer. What work well on one surface could be a hazard if used on another.
If you make no other changes to a bath, just updating the flooring can give it new life and change the overall appearance.
