Nearly everyone has seen vinyl flooring at one point or another. However, they may not have realized the floor was vinyl, especially with newer tiles. You can now get vinyl tiles in different-sized squares and in plank shapes that simulate hardwood flooring.
What Is Vinyl?
Vinyl flooring is a composite of several layers of material. On the bottom is a vinyl tile backing to add stability, followed by a printed design, a protective clear film layer, and an additional protective wear layer of urethane. The result is a low cost alternative to ceramic tile or hardwood floors.
Choosing the Right Flooring
Homeowners have multiple flooring options available today. In addition to vinyl, there is hardwood, carpet, linoleum, slate, rubber, concrete, bamboo, and laminate. Choosing the right flooring depends upon its use. Vinyl tiles can be installed nearly everywhere in a house, even where you expect wet floors.
How Much Does It Cost?
Compared to the cost of hardwood flooring, vinyl tile prices are very economical. They range from $0.29 to $4.00 per square foot. Thicker, better quality tiles will be more expensive. And professional installation can add as much as $2.00 per square foot.
Can I Install It Myself?
You might want to change out your current flooring with vinyl tiles. This do-it-yourself project is easy, particularly if you choose peel ‘n stick ( tiles already have the glue applied, and are covered with a removable backing ) or glue-less ( spray-on adhesive or adhesive tabs ) tiles. Luxury vinyl tiles require you to apply the adhesive yourself. For the best results, follow manufacturer’s instructions by preparing the subflooring to ensure proper adhesion.
How Long Will It Last?
Quality vinyl tile can easily last for 20 years. Cheaper tiles will last only five years. Follow manufacturer’s instructions for care and maintenance, and your floors may look new for longer. Remove and replace any tile that is damaged – no need to replace the entire floor.
Caring for your floor
Caring for your vinyl tile floor should be one of the easiest things you’ll do. Wipe up any spills, and sweep up anything that falls on the floor, to protect it from damage. Read the manufacturer’s instructions for the best way to maintain your floor; then follow their instructions. Doing so could add years to your floor’s life.
Today’s vinyl tile floors are nothing like what your parents had in the past. They are inexpensive to install, easy to care for, and are beautiful to look at. If you want to give your home a new look, consider getting vinyl tiles. Once they’re installed you’ll be so glad you did.
