One of the most dramatic changes you can make to your home is the flooring. You can redo everything in a room but it doesn’t truly come together until new floors are installed. There are so many options to choose from that it can be difficult to know where to start. With a little bit of research and planning, it can be easy to pick out new flooring for every room in your home.
The most popular type of flooring is definitely hardwood. Even within this category however, there are a lot of options. When choosing hardwood floors, you have to take a few things into consideration. Do you have a lot of traffic in the room, like children and or pets? If the traffic level is low, you can afford to go with a great real hardwood option like Oak, Maple or Cherry. Another great choice within the wood floor category is Bamboo. These floors aren’t really wood but are very durable and environmentally friendly. Bamboo floors are very durable and come in a wide variety of colors. If the room has a lot of traffic you might want to go with a laminate option. Laminate wood floors have come a long way and look a lot like natural wood floors. What’s great about laminate is that they are virtually indestructible, holding up to burns, scratches and spills.
For kitchens or bathroom areas some great flooring options are linoleum, cork or ceramic tile. Linoleum is a classic flooring option and is available in pretty much every color imaginable. It is a very environmentally friendly environment, made completely from natural materials. Linoleum will also last you a very long time, is relatively maintenance free and is incredibly durable. Ceramic tile is a great option for kitchens and bathrooms because it is extremely water resistant. Ceramic tile does require some maintenance as you will have to seal it every few years. Cork has been making a run to the top in terms of popularity recently. This type of floor is great for just about any room, but can be great in a kitchen. It is soft and will give just a bit under your feet making it very comfortable to stand at the sink to do dishes.
Finally, for rooms like bedrooms, living rooms and family rooms, you can’t beat the feel of carpet under your feet. If you can get past the installation, carpet is a great option in rooms that need to be cozy. They even make carpet tiles now to make installation easier but get the look you want. There are a lot of different carpeting options to fit the needs of any room. You can find really plush, cushy carpet, carpet that is treated to repel stains and carpet that is made for the outdoors. Think about what your needs are in the room before you go shopping. This way you will be able to make the smartest decision for your home and guarantee that you will be happy with that choice.
