The tile floor layout is very important when attempting a do-it-yourself tile installation. It is an area which is often overlooked and if done correctly, reap rewards. Transversley, if done wrong, can cost a lot in materials .

The first step is to find the centre of the room and create a centre line from one end of the room(the end at which the door is located) to the other (the end opposite the door) using a chalk line.. Where the two chalk lines cross, this should be the centre of the room. Ensure that the two lines form a 90 degree angle.

The next step is to lay the tiles without being fixed (no mortar), so as to see where the last whole tile ends. This should be done in both directions, and if the gap at the end is less than half a tile, move the tiiles away from the centre line until you achieve the correct gap. Once you have done this, mark the floor where the first tile will start. The idea is to have a little less than half a tile as the last tile If you have over half a tile for the last tile you will end up wasting the remainder of the tile.
