But if you take a day and really do some research, you will find that there are all kinds of choices out there instead of traditional kitchen tiles.

We are in the middle of renovating a 1972 semi detached house. The floor was a worn out vinyl which we removed, to reveal the plywood sub floor. After getting a quote to have tiles laid in the kitchen and hallway, that exceeded $4000.00, we decided that was too much for our budget, since every room in this house needed some attention.

We had already picked a kitchen layout, and cabinets, that were beautiful and yet affordable, but the floor was going to be a puzzle. We didn’t want to do peel and stick tiles, and we didn’t want to do more linoleum, so what to do?

We were looking at the laminate flooring section, but ruled that out because there is a big patio door in this kitchen, and the side and front door in the adjoining hallway, and water and most laminate floors do not mix. We get some heavy winters here, so I could just imagine that laminate would not be down for too long, that also went for the real hardwood flooring.

We then discovered another alternative, it was a high traffic thick vinyl style tile in strips of three, that looked and felt like tiles. The tile strips could be put right over your existing floor, and the strip of 3 tiles, had a adhesion strip where you join the next set, and this adhesion is very strong. We found that out by accident, when we accidentally touch two together, so you have to be careful of that.

But once laid down on the floor, it is tough, waterproof, and looks like tile, and is durable and thick, yet can be cut with a knife for trimming.

Once we were done, it looked fantastic, and because it sticks to each other, you can take this up down the road without huge expense. You just used double sided tape to get it started at the edges. So, don’t get this mixed up with peel and stick thin tiles, go to the laminate flooring section, and you will see these new products. There are all kinds of makes and models of these new flooring ideas.

Kitchen tiles, have come a long way, and are not restricted to ceramics anymore. There are many more affordable options. This option cost us $750.00 compared to over $4000.00 and looks great. Leaving us more money for other renovations.

Take the time to go through these big box stores or your local hardware store, and check out the latest products, do some research and you could save a lot of money, we did.
