Limestone is a well-known building material. It often contains small fossils of marine origin, together with clays, of sedimentary origin, which confer it incredible colors.
Durability, hardness and cost effectiveness are only some of the characteristics that have made limestone very popular as a floor tile. It is also completely hygienic, a declared enemy to bacteria, mould or other hazardous organisms.
If properly maintained, limestone can be long lasting. Strong acidic cleaning agents or the bleach have to be avoided, because they will discolor the stone and damage its natural shining. Tile floors made from limestone need to be sealed regularly (once every 1 to 2 years), because being a porous stone it absorbs liquids that come in touch with it. Regular cleaning is also required in order to help prevent dust or dirt to build up on the floor and damage the sealer.
The maintenance of limestone tile floors can be done using a water & oil repellent or the traditional method. In both cases, initial cleaning of the floor is necessary. It consists in removing any deposits of mortar after fixing the tiles, vacuuming carefully and washing the floor with a slightly wet cloth.
The water & oil repellent treatment has the purpose to protect the stone from the penetration of water and oil, due to the action of inhibitors which cover the grains of the stone with a minute film. This layer is also efficient in preventing moss, lichens, bacteria and mould growth. The treatment has to be repeated at intervals indicated by the manufacturer and on thoroughly dry stone.
The traditional method uses very hot water combined with special liquid soap or soap flakes. After the floor has been cleaned, water it considerably and evenly. Due to the hot water, the soap will enter the pores of the stone. Repeat the operation at least 3 times, or until the tiles get a whitish appearance. Do not remove the soap. Its purpose is to nourish the tiles. In a few weeks the whitish aspect will disappear.
Do not use multipurpose floor cleaning products. The same water and soap method can be applied for weekly maintenance. It creates a cover of calcium carbonate which helps protect the stone from staining, increasing its natural beauty. It really goes even for the beige and honey limestone tiles, a shade usually considered more demanding.
