The beauty of tile floors is that when they are installed correctly they will last years to come (at least 20 years). I see it all the time, poor installation practices lead to failure of the floor. There’s alot of things to know before you start the installation. 1. Prep work- clean all thinset, paint, texture and any foreign matter off the slab. Now here’s a trick that takes on average 30 minutes to do but most installers don’t do it, mostly on new construction. It’s easy. First get a bucket of water,a large grout sponge, dunk the sponge into the water. Wring it out and then take it and wash the slab, wash one stripe then flip it and do another stripe on the other side then rinse and repeat until the slab is clean.
Then you want to lay a grid on the floor. You can do this by seeing where you want whole tile to start, once you have made your decision take three tile and lay them on the floor with the size of grout joint you want. Take a tape measure and put it on the inside joint of the first tile and measure to the end of the last tile. This will give you the layout measurement. Start on the first wall you want a whole tile on, then put a mark on the floor on left side, do the same right side. Then find the other place you want a whole tile. Select one of the end wall to start the other whole tile. Repeat the same steps as the first wall. Pop a chalk line on both sets of marks. Take a square to make sure the lines are true. Then measure the layout for the rest of the floor. Then take a can of clear spray paint and seal the lines to the slab. Then wash the slab again. Now you are ready to set tile. Make your thinset wet enough to poor out of the bucket, like cake mix. When you set the tile make sure to press it into the thinset. Then grout and your done.
