The addition of a tile floor is a good beginning for making your bathroom a little more upscale, and tile in a bath is a good selling feature should you sell your home in the future.
Tile floors have many advantages especially in a bathroom:
- Tile floors hold up well in moist areas if they are installed and sealed properly.
- Tile is easy to clean and maintain.
- Being a natural product that has been around for a very long time, tile is not subject to the whims of style. It is here to stay.
- Tile is available in a wide variety of colors and textures.
- Tile can take on many looks depending on the color, the application of the installation and layout, and the grout chosen to go with it.
- Tile adds value to your home both in dollars, and in eye appeal
For a small or modest sized bath it is better to stay with more muted colors to help expand the visual size of the room. Choosing a grout that is close to the color in the tile will be easier to maintain and help the color flow across the floor.
Since contrast tends to stop the eye, choosing a grout closely matched to the shade of your tile will help the eye to travel across the floor, and give the feel of a more expansive space. Also choosing colored grout rather than the traditional white will make it easier to maintain over the years.
DIY Tile Installation
If you are reasonably handy, then laying tile on a DIY basis can save you a substantial amount of money, leaving more in your budget for other amenities in your bath.
Be prepared to take more time doing the job than if you had it professionally installed. Patience and preparedness will be your two best assets. Don’t expect to have the job done as quickly as those who do this as a profession.
Get good detailed instructions, and assemble all your materials and tools. Many home improvement centers have detailed brochures if you ask. Some even provide video tutorials for your use.
When you initially purchase your tile, buy extra for errors or breakage. This is important, as you may not be able to match it later. Left over tile will not go to waste if you are inventive. Extra tiles could cover the area under either your bathroom or kitchen sink making it easier to clean and maintain.
Keep future changes in mind as you select color and pattern. Select a shade or color that will flow with subtle changes in decor as the years pass. Tile will have a long life and change is inevitable, so plan ahead.
