Laminate floor underlayments are objects that you put on the floor prior to installation of your flooring materials. The function of laminate floor underlayments is to absorb the minor imperfection in the subfloor and to reduce the sound produced while you are walking on the floor. It is important to take note that this type of material, when installed, does not improve the quality or strengthen the floors. It is installed to reduce overhead sounds in the room.
If you are choosing the right underlayment for your new laminate floors, it is important that you follow the recommended one for a particular flooring. Any home improvement expert can help you with that decision. On the other hand, there are four types of underlayment that you can use for your floors.
Foam. This is the most common material for your flooring. This is a thin padding which measures about 1/8″ thick. They are usually installed over a plywood sub floor. This particular material does not have a moisture barrier in it thus it is great to be placed on floors where there is little moisture found.
Combo. This material is made from foam and film. It has a moisture barrier attached from one side. You can use this material in areas where moisture rises from the sub floor.
Floor Muffler. This is a closed cell type material which has an attached moisture barrier on all sides. In fact, this is considered as the highest rated underlayment. It is used over concrete or plywood subfloors and offers more versatility than other underlayments.
Modified. This is thicker than the laminate tile floorings. The raw materials from which this product is manufactured ranges from a high-density foam, cell foam, fiber or even rubber. It provides greater noise reduction and comfort levels. This particular product is great to be used on second floors or higher floors.
